Hoy empiezo con este último, con fotos de la llegada a Edinburgo (volamos de East Midlands, el aeropuerto local que queda bien cerquita de Nottingham), el viaje en tren a Glasgow y el primer día allí.

I've been neglecting this blog lately, and I've tons of photos to upload. What I'm going to do is to stop doing it chronologically and rotate between different places and events. I still have plenty of photos of Portugal, of things I've done in Nottingham, plus all the photos of my recent trip to Scotland and Ireland.
Today I'll start with the latter, with photos of the arrival to Edinburgh (we flew from East Midlands, the local airport really close to Nottingham), the train to Glasgow and the first day there.

Las siguientes fotos son ya de Glasgow. Realmente no tenía ninguna expectativa de la ciudad (no que esperara algo malo, simplemente que no sabía nada de ella, así que no sabía qué esperar), así que fue una hermosa sorpresa. Es una ciudad muy linda, con un centro relativamente compacto y fácil de explorar. Algunas zonas estaban un poco feúchas, pero en general la mayor parte era muy prolija, con una arquitectura muy linda, en su mayor parte de los siglos XVIII y XIX.
The next photos are all from Glasgow. I didn't really have any expectations of the city (not that I had bad expectations, I just didn't know enough about it to expect anything in particular), so it was a beautiful surprise. It's a very pretty city, with a relatively compact and easy-to-explore downtown area. Some areas did look slightly shabby, but on the whole, it was quite neat and well-conserved, with lovely architecture, mostly from the 18th and 19th century.
Saliendo del hotel, que quedaba pegado a la estación central. Claramente fue un gran hotel en su época, pero ahora está un poco venido a menos. De todas formas, lo básico estaba bien: buena calefacción, la cama estaba cómoda y el baño era correcto, con una buena ducha. Y el cuarto era enorme!
Coming out of the hotel, which was right next to the central station. It was clearly one of the big, nice hotels in its time, but it's definitely very shabby now. Still, the basics were fine: good heating, the bed was comfy and the bathroom was perfectly ok, with a good shower. And the room itself was HUGE!

Al no tener mucha idea de las atracciones, lo primero que hicimos fue tomar un city tour, en este bus. Esta bueno, hay toda una flota de ómnibus que cubren todo el recorrido cada 15-30 minutos y el ticket es válido por 2 días, así que te podés bajar y subir cuantas veces quieras. Nosotros lo que hicimos fue primero hacer el tour completo y después subir y bajar en los lugares que nos parecieron interesantes y queríamos visitar. Por suerte el día que llegamos estaba húmedo pero no hacía mucho frío y durante el tour no llovió (hasta hizo sol), así que pudimos ir arriba, en la parte abierta.
Not having much idea of what the main attractions were, what we did was hire a city tour, on this bus. It's good, there's a whole fleet of buses that cover the route every 15 - 30 minutes, and the ticket is valid for 2 days, so you can get on and off as many times as you want. What we did was first take the whole tour and then simply use it as transport to the places we thought looked interesting and wanted to visit. Fortunately, though it was damp on that day, it wasn't very cold and it didn't rain during the tour (it was actually sunny most of the time), so we could go on the open part of the bus.

Este es el río Clyde, que pasa por la ciudad. Hay un dicho que es "The Clyde made Glasgow and Glasgow made the Clyde": "El Cyde hizo a Glasgow y Glasgow hizo al Clyde", porque este es un río mayormente hecho por el hombre. Era un arroyo llanito, y fue drenado y drenado hasta que se hizo lo suficientemente profundo para que pudiera ser navegado por barcos grandes. Y con esto fue que Glasgow tuvo buen acceso al océano y tuvo un gran desarrollo, llegando a ser una de las mayores ciudades del Reino Unido. De ahí la primera parte del dicho: el Clyde hizo a Glasgow (lo que es).
This is the river Clyde, which goes through the city. There's a saying: "The Clyde made Glasgow and Glasgow made the Clyde", because this is a mostly man-made river. It was a relatively shallow stream, and it was dredged and dredged over the years until big ships could sail in it. And this access to the ocean was the base of much of Glasgow's development into one of the UK's largest cities. Thus: the Clyde made Glasgow into what it is.

El Clyde Auditorium, llamado por los locales el "armadillo", por su forma (que realmente se aprecia mejor de costado, pero no tengo fotos).

Llegando al West End de la ciudad, donde, entre otras cosas, está la Universidad de Glasgow. Esta fue la parte que más me gustó.

Acá nos bajamos, en el Museo Kelvingrove, el más importante de Glasgow. Es gratis (yay!) y tiene exhibiciones y colecciones de arte espectaculares.
We got off the bus here, at the Kelvingrove Museum, the most important in Glasgow. It's free (yay!) and the exhibits and art collections are spectacular.
Eh, bueno, como van a ver en fotos posteriores, durante todo el viaje nos divertimos mucho en las tiendas de los museos y castillos (si, ya sé que todos rondamos los 30 años. Y?). Acá estoy posando con un gorro con peluca pelirroja. Si lo apretabas, tocaba música de gaita :-)
Er, well, as you'll see in later pictures, during the whole trip we had quite a bit of fun in museum and castle gift shops (yes, I know we're all about 30 years of age. So what?). Here I am posing with a hat which included some red hair. If pressed, it played bagpipe music :-)
