Our second day in Edinburgh started with a visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which has been the principal residence of the Kings and Queens of Scotland since the 15th century. Mary Queen of Scots, for instance, spent most of her time in Scotland there, and it's currently the official residence of Queen Elizabeth when she visits the country.
BTW, "Holyrood" comes from the Scots "Haly Ruid": Holy Cross.
Empezando nuestro día. El palacio queda al final de la Royal Mile, en el extremo opuesto al Castillo, así que ese día visitamos la parte de la Royal Mile que no habíamos visto el día anterior.
Starting our day. The palace is located at one end of the Royal Mile, opposite to the Castle, basically, so that day we visited the part of the Royal Mile we hadn't seen the day before.

No sé si se lee bien la placa; esta es la supuesta tumba de David Rizzio, el secretario italiano de Mary Queen of Scots que fue asesinado por su segundo marido, Lord Darnley. En el palacio en sí estuvimos en el cuarto donde sucedió el asesinato (no hay fotos, lamentablemente, ya que no las permitían adentro), donde irrumpió Darnley con sus amigotes cuando Rizzio estaba almorzando con Mary y sus damas de compañía, lo arrastraron afuera y lo mataron dándole 57 puñaladas.
Un año después, Darnley apareció estrangulado en el jardín de su casa, donde la noche anterior había habido una fuerte explosión. Aparentemente había escapado del primer intento de asesinato (la explosión), y lo atraparon y mataron en el jardín. El rumor fue que la cosa había sido planeada por el Conde de Bothwell, que luego fue el tercer marido de Mary, y que Mary habría estado involucrada también. Que tal es chusmerío del siglo XVI? :-)
I'm not sure if you can read the plaque: this is the supposed tomb of David Rizzio, Mary Queen of Scots' Italian secretary, who was murdered by her second husband, Lord Darnley. At the Palace we were in the room where the murder took place (there are no photos, unfortunately, as they weren't allowed), where Darnley burst in with his cronies while Rizzio was dining with Mary and her ladies-in-waiting. They dragged him out and killed him by stabbing him 57 times.
A year later, Darnley was found strangled in the gardens of his residence, where the night before there had been a strong explosion. Apparently, he had escaped the first assassination attempt (the explosion) and had then been caught and murdered in the gardens. The rumour was that the whole thing had been planned by the Earl of Bothwell, who later became Mary's third husband, and that Mary had been involved herself. How 'bout that 16th century gossip? :-)

Entre la foto anterior y esta estuvo toda la visita al interior del Palacio (impresionante). Acá se ve la abadía de Holyrood, que está en ruinas y fue lo primero construido.
